Description: This 2nd-3rd century A.D. irridescent globular Roman green glass vessel was purchased in Rome in 2003 in a shop on the Via deli Coronari, a street renown for antiques. It has been kept out of light and safe from moisture. It's part of a small personal collection of ancient relics and artifacts the gods have decided will be moving on to new cultural stewardship. This relic's diminutive stature makes it intimate and personal. The translucency, texture, tarnish, and interior residues are vivid and beautiful, with an amazing palette of highlights and tints in different day and night ambiance, so I would fill it only with light. About Roman glass, Wikipedia says: "The natural 'aqua' shade can be intensified with the addition of copper. During the Roman period this was derived from the recovery of oxide scale from scrap copper when heated, to avoid the contaminants present in copper minerals. Copper produced a translucent blue moving towards a darker and denser green. By adding lead, the green colour produced by copper could be darkened."
