Information: An important work on geometry by a noted medieval astronomer, containing the original Latin in facsimile, an English translation, and notes and commentary by Father Hughes. From the book jacket description: "While attending the Vienna Academy, Johann Muller, better known as Regiomontanus, found his enthusiasm for astronomy frustrated by errors in the Alfonsine Tables and by inadequate translations of Ptolemy. Sufficiently goaded by this to master Greek, he then completed the translation of Epitome begun by his teacher, and subsequently translated, wrote, and published many other works in mathematics and astronomy. As he improved and expanded astronomical tools, he was able to rectify the current calendar, construct a "perpetual motion" machine, and make reliable observations on the comets. In 1464 Regiomontanus completed De triangulis omnimodis, written primarily as a text for advancing the science of astronomy. On Triangles, published posthumously in 1533, is a tribute to the brilliant mathematician, astronomer, and inventor who was the first European scholar to treat trigonometry as a theoretical science. Translated into English for the first time by Barnabas Hughes, O.F.M., On Triangles is presented here with reproductions of the original Latin pages facing the English translation. Although Regiomontanus' vast publication plan, both for his own works and for translations of the ancients, was interrupted by his death in 1476, his achievements greatly influenced both his contemporaries and those who followed, notably Columbus, Rhaeticus, and Copernicus. In the five books of On Triangles, Regiomontanus not only unified and organized the trigonometric knowledge of his age but also made his own original contributions. Book II is particularly noteworthy, for it contains algebraic solutions by quadratic equations of triangles, together with the first implicit statement of the trigonometric formula for the area of a triangle. Books III, IV, and V contain theorems necessary for spherical triangles, and in Book V the cosine law for spherical triangles has been reworked into its first practical formulation."Highly informative and attractive work that will merits a place in any library on astronomy, mathematics, history of science, medieval science, the scientific revolution, etc.Biographical Note: Johannes Müller von Königsberg (1436 – 1476), better known as Regiomontanus, was a mathematician, astrologer and astronomer of the German Renaissance, active in Vienna, Buda and Nuremberg. His contributions were instrumental in the development of Copernican heliocentrism in the decades following his death. Regiomontanus wrote under the Latinized name of Ioannes de Monteregio (or Monte Regio; Regio Monte); the toponym Regiomontanus was first used by Philipp Melanchthon in 1534. He is named after Königsberg in Lower Franconia, not the larger Königsberg (modern Kaliningrad) in Prussia.Father Hughes, ordained in 1953 and currently Principal of Saint Mary's High School in Stockton, California, was awarded a Shell Merit Residency in mathematics education at Stanford University for 1965-66. In preparing this book he combined his thorough training in medieval Latin with years of experience in mathematics, both as a graduate student in medieval mathematics and as a high school mathematics teacher.
