Description: Offered here is a nice set of A. C. Gilbert parts: Two (2) part number ‘GS’ Eccentrics and One (1) ‘GU’ Eccentric loop. As stated in the auction title, these parts are reproductions. Gilbert introduced the “Mechanical Wonders” No. 9 set in 1929. This set included a number of special parts like helical gears, slotted cranks, step pulleys, cams, etc. that were used in the 20-pages of Mechanical Wonders models to demonstrate various forms of machine motion. The manual included 2 pages using the ‘GS’ eccentric(s) and ‘GU’ eccentric loop. These parts were included in the 1929-32 No. 9 and 1929-32 No. 10 sets. Those sets included what this auction offers: Two ‘GS’ eccentrics and One ‘GU’ eccentric loop. Curiously, the separate parts page of the manual shows the ‘GS’ eccentric with a hole through the middle. As an aside, the eccentrics were a P7 pulley half with a hub attached ¼” from the center. Perhaps Gilbert used a prototype photo of a P7 pulley half with a hub attached for the manual picture only (?). I have never seen an original part with that hole in the middle; these reproductions were made without the center hole. The three parts were used as an assembly on an axle. The two ‘GS’ parts had their “back sides” facing each other with the ‘GU’ loop placed in between. The loop set in the resulting “V” of the two “GS” eccentrics, which when placed back-to-back form a pulley. The set screws of the “GS’s” were tightened so the parts rotated with the axle. The “GU” loop was attached with a P15 coupling to another axle to demonstrate “eccentric” motion. One of the auction photos shows the extremes of travel. NOTE: This auction is for TWO (2) GS eccentrics and ONE (1) GU eccentric loop only. The manual pages shown are for reference only and are not included in this auction. If you are interested in learning more about Gilbert Erector sets, Google ACGHS for the home page of the A. C. Gilbert Heritage Society. Included in the photos is a sample page of an Erector parts guide I wrote about 10 years ago; it details the variations of all of the parts used between 1933 – 1962 and is available as a free download from the ACGHS web site. Another trivial fact; the ACGHS president and webmaster is one of A. C. Gilbert’s grandsons!
