Many parts of the movie was filmed in original outer space. Filming in space was carried out on the Soviet space station Salyut-7 and the spacecraft Soyuz T-9 by cosmonauts Vladimir Lyakhov and Alexander Alexandrov. The film shows footage of tests of the emergency rescue system for the crew of the Soyuz spacecraft. Two years later, similar events happened in real life - the Salyut-7 station lost contact with the MCC, and the Soyuz T-13 crew (Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Viktor Savinykh) successfully docked with the station in manual mode and restored its operation. Festivals and awards: 1984 - 17th All-Union Film Festival (Kiev): the program of feature films includes a special prize and a diploma for the film "Return from Orbit" Pavel Kuznetsov and Vyacheslav Mukhin are not only good friends, but are considered the most trained crew in the cosmonaut corps. For many years they had been preparing for the first joint flight, but at the start there was an accident in the launch vehicle, and the cosmonauts were saved by an emergency rescue system. Shortly before the new joint launch, Kuznetsov's wife suddenly dies, leaving him with his little daughter. Being in deep mourning, he not only refuses to fly into space, but also decides to part with astronautics forever. Mukhin catches up with Kuznetsov's train, on which he leaves Baikonur, but cannot convince him to pick up the report. Getting off at a deserted station, in the middle of the night he calls his girlfriend Sasha and offers to marry him. The next day Mukhin will start with another partner. Having heard on the radio the TASS message about the launch, Kuznetsov's neighbor in the compartment describes the work of the astronauts as an easy walk for awards and fame, but Kuznetsov reminds him that they may not return. During the flight at the orbital station, an accident occurs in the electrical circuit of the docking station, as a result of which Mukhin's partner is seriously injured and must be urgently sent to Earth. However, as a result of the accident, their ship cannot undock from the station. Kuznetsov, by order of the head of the cosmonaut detachment, Major General Sviridov, was removed from the train, and he and his partner took off on the second ship to help Mukhin. Having dragged the wounded astronaut through open space to Kuznetsov's ship, which then returns to Earth, Mukhin and Kuznetsov restore the station's work and leave it. However, their ship gets caught in a meteor shower, which breaks through the hull plating and damages the thrusters and attitude control system. The astronauts close their helmets and switch to a reserve supply of oxygen, which they have for a maximum of 12 hours. This time Major General Sviridov flies to the rescue. Due to the fact that air comes out of Kuznetsov's ship, it rotates strongly around its axis, which makes docking with Sviridov's ship almost impossible. Taking advantage of Mukhin's idea, Kuznetsov leaves the spacecraft into open space and stops its rotation using a compressed gas cylinder and a spare engine of the attitude control system. Only a little bit remains before the docking of the ships, Kuznetsov prepares to connect the air hose as soon as possible, but at this time he runs out of oxygen. Mukhin switches the oxygen supply from his spacesuit to a friend's spacesuit, dooming himself to death ...
