His other famous legal case included the Dred Scott case, where he defended a former slave owner against a lawsuit filed by his slave Dred Scott, who was claiming he should be a free man because his former owner had resided in a slavery free state and territory.Despite defending a former slave owner, Reverdy Johnson was against slavery, and helped to ensure Maryland remained in the Union during the Civil War.Reverdy Johnson served as a United States Senator, Attorney General of the United States, and Ambassador to England.
