KNECHT ‘ And ‘ solingen ‘ This scarce style is identified as either a model 1767 / 1770 depending on the source SABER / LIGHT SWORD manufactured in the pre unified German city of solingen European made sabers like this saw plenty of action during the American Revolutionary War imported for domestic use by the Americans ( patriots ) or found in the hands of hessian troops fighting along side with the British red coats It has a 28” long blade The Over all length is 32” 34” inches total length when measured in the scabbard The sheath is made of thin leather stretched over a wooden core with brass fittings The leather exhibits typical age crazing and scuffs to the surface , there is a thin 2 inch sliver sliver of wood missing along the back of the sheath , about 10” from the throat The hanger / suspension ring is missing ,… The bottom end / tip of the sheath ( drag ) is worn flat from actual dragging wear , from long use in the battle field ( this sword saw the proverbial elephant ! ) ‘ KNECHT’ was a famous multi generational sword / blade manufacturer based in solingen Germany The hilt is similar to the French style , It has a lightweight blade with thinly groved fullers on either side There are age-old sharpening marks ( field sharpened ) indicating that it actually saw combat !
