Description: So, as I move on to posting some of Dad's larger rocks I find myself wondering is this a mineral specimen or rough material for making cabochons? This one could be both. This piece of unlabeled rock was in a box with other items that Dad was saving to slab. At one point, starting about 50+ years ago Dad had a slab saw. When my mom died and he moved to a retirement community with a lapidary club he did not take it with him so these rocks have been "pending" for more than 15 years and possibly up to 50+ years. Although this one had no label it looks like it could be Rhodonite or Rhodocrosite. It isn't as gray as the other samples of Rhodonite that Dad had, but I don't fully know the difference. The stone weighs about 1023 grams and measures roughly 133 X 66 X 72 mm. My photos show the stone dry and wet - the photos with an aluminum pie tin show it wet. The pink is a soft pink that is really lovely! With his PhD in mineralogy, my father loved to collect rocks. He took great pride in his mineral collection which he carefully organized by chemical groups. Since he recently passed away I'm tasked with finding his treasures a new home. I still have loads of rocks and rough material to re-home so I'll be posting more of my father's rock collections (rough material, cut stones, pendants, mineral specimens, and other rock related items) off and on for months so do make my store one of your favorites and check in often to see what new items are listed.
