Description: The Quest of the Golden Girl - Edmund Clarence Stedman's copy with a letter to him from author Author: Le Gallienne, Richard Title: The Quest of the Golden Girl - Edmund Clarence Stedman's copy with a letter to him from author Publication: London and New York: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1896 Edition: First Printing Description: Hardcover. 8vo, publisher's teal green cloth, with spine and front cover with handsome gilt decorations (by Will Bradley we believe), good with light mottling to cloth, soil, old tape stains and slight worming to endpapers, light marginal worming to pp. 110-162, bookplate of Edmund Clarence Stedman on pastedown, latter with envelope tipped to front flyleaf, verso of flyleaf has tipped in slip of paper with clipped poem by Le Gallienne from a journal (small patch on that page using pH-neutral document repair tissue), first blank with mounted full page newsprint photo of Le Gallienne, verso with catalog clipping, half title with some pencilled bibliographical information. The letter (from the postmark, probably 1900) is sent to Stedman in Bronxville, NY and is on stationary from The Schuyler on W. 45th St. in NYC. It reads, "My dear Mr. Stedman: you gracefully pretended that you were in my debt - which made me happy indeed that you should even fame that you were, particularly as your generous misconception resulted in so magnificent a "paying up "as those four volumes with which you gave me such a pleasant shock of good fortune a few day I fear you may think that so tardy and acknowledgment chimes ill with gratitude, and indeed I feel sorry that the first gladness I had in your gift did not spring spontaneously to paper as it so much desired. But, literally, the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches have these last days obscured for me all happiness concerned; and a trifle of asthma has also made the pleasantness of thanking you the more difficult. But, I'm sure you know, all the same, that I thank you from my heart. If you're not mind my saying so, the tears sprang to my eyes as I read all your delightful inscriptions - so graciously and gracefully conceived. I wrote and immediate answered to one of them: The poet's heart is ever young / His singing days are never over / And, from his first to his last song / He is incorrigibly a lover. The volume of your poems I particularly thank you for. I wrote some unimportant praise of it in a London paper soon after its appearance. The Shelley poems struck me as particularly fine -- and of course, there was so much else; and someday when we have a chance to talk I would much like to talk over with you your most interesting and illuminating theories on Poetry & beauty. I am glad to think you are to be domiciled in New York as early as Nov. 10 & I sincerely trust we may meet, before I go across the sea to Christmas at Surrey. Again thanking you for the very much valued graciousness you have shown me, and, with sincere person regard, believe me always yours, Richard Le Gallienne." Good.
