NIXON - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 05/07/1954 - HFSID 48365 RICHARD NIXON Vice President Nixon, who had "an extremely heavy schedule" and missed a visitor, offers to meet at another, mutually convenient time. Typed Letter Signed: "Dick Nixon" as Eisenhower's Vice President, 1p, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1954 May 7. On letterhead of "Office of the Vice President" to Mr. George Killion, American President Lines, Ltd., San Francisco, California. Begins: "Dear George". In full: "This is just a note to tell you how sorry I was to have missed you when you were in town recently. As Miss Cox told your secretary I had an extremely heavy schedule that week and consequently was unable to see some of my friends as much as I would have liked to. I hope you will drop me a note the next time you are planning to be in Washington so that we can arrange a mutually convenient time to get together. With all good wishes, Sincerely". Pencil note (unknown hand): "appt. made/for/5-13-54". With original typed mailing envelope bearing Nixon's imprinted frank. GEORGE A. KILLION, the President of American President Lines, Ltd., served as Treasurer of the National Democratic Committee, and he was one of the co-founders of the World Trade Club. RICHARD MILHOUS NIXON (1913-1994) was elected 37th President of the United States in 1968 after representing California in the U.S. House of Representatives (1947-1951) and U.S. Senate (1951-1953) and serving two terms as Dwight D. Eisenhower's Vice President (1953-1961). He lost (1960), then won, extremely close Presidential elections (facing John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey, respectively), then won re-election by a landslide against George McGovern in 1972. Nixon's re-election triumph rapidly turned sour, however, as the burgeoning Watergate scandal claimed more and more of his key aides and finally compelled his own resignation in August 1974. A pragmatic conservative who gained an early reputation as an anti-communist but achieved diplomatic triumphs in relations with China and the Soviet Union, Nixon's prolific writing in his retirement years helped repair his reputation and hasten his re-emergence as an elder statesman. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Staple holes and rust stain at upper left margin. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper left and lower right margins. Overall, fine condition..
