Biography Richard PetersonBiography from Mid Century ArtRichard Peterson, born in San Pedro, California in 1947, grew up in the sand, sun and surf culture of Southern California during the heady years of the 1960s. While he came of age riding the waves of famed surfing spots like Huntington Beach, Malibu and Rincon, he grew into a 'Renaissance' man - a painter, pianist and collector of antiques with a scholar's knowledge and an artist's eye. Peterson's love of the outdoors manifested itself early, and he became an excellent surfer who loved the routine of surfing in the quiet early morning hours. His love of surf knew no bounds - he once flew all the way to Australia to catch a weekend of good waves. The golden tan he bore from the endless summer stood in contrast to the velvet smoking jackets and cravats he affected.As a young man, he discovered that he had an unusual artistic ability, but he was not drawn to the modern styles of Abstract or Pop art that were popular in his youth, but rather to the paintings of the Old Masters. Painters who did not attend an art school are often described as "self-taught," but in Peterson's case it may be more appropriate to call him "self-educated" or an autodidact. He spent many years studying the works of the Old Masters in the museums, particularly those of Adriaen Van de Velde (1636 - 1672) and Adam Pynacker (1622 - 1673). Peterson found old treatises that described the paint-making, painting and glazing techniques of the Old Masters. He learned to grind his own colors, painstakingly prepare his canvasses and glaze the finished works like painters from the "Golden Age" of the 17th century. In the end, he concluded that that Old Masters didn't have secrets that had been lost as much as that modern painters were often unwilling to dedicate the time necessary to master the time-honored techniques that students once learned in the atelier of their masters.While still in his late teens he began selling work to Los Angeles dealers Jane Freeman and Howard Morseburg. While these early works showed the Classical influences he was absorbing through his studies, they lacked the sophistication of his mature work. Fortunately for the young artist, he met the art dealer and gallery owner Henny Vorgang, who sold Peterson's work in his own tiny Old World Gallery on the Balboa Peninsula but also promoted his prodigy to other galleries with indefatigable enthusiasm. Vorgang was a charming raconteur who had the foresight to frame Peterson's works in antique mouldings, and whose Louis XIV style gave them a sense of permanence and emphasized their Classical origins. Vorgang traveled up and down the coast, and as Peterson's work matured these "new Old Masters" were soon selling for thousands of dollars, excellent prices for the 1970s.Peterson played the piano beautifully by ear and became a wine connoisseur and collector of Elizabethan antiques, making him an ideal dinner guest for the worldly sophisticates who collected his paintings. He began spending the summers in St. Moritz, that legendary Alpine playground of the rich and famous, and his annual showing at the Palace Hotel became a popular event with the Royal guests who called the Palace home. During the fall, winter and spring Peterson kept up his love of surfing, continuing a long friendship with the legendary surfing rebel Mickey Dora, subject of a recent book and article in Vanity Fair. While he spent his mornings chasing the surf, he spent his afternoons painting idealized landscapes that took viewers back into the world of the 17th century, where craftsmanship was still a respected value.Peterson was represented by Henry Vorgang for many years, but as the Orange County-based dealer aged and retired, Peterson joined the gallery of art dealer and artist agent Howard Morseburg, who sold hundreds of his beautifully crafted landscapes - first in his Wilshire Boulevard gallery and later in his Copenhagen Gallery in Solvang, California, just north of Santa Barbara. By the mid-1990s, the artist - already a man who cultivated an air of mystery about himself - became increasingly restive and reclusive, finally withdrawing from the art world altogether for an extended period of time. One imagines him living abroad, in some small Swiss hamlet, surrounded by his books on precious antique furniture. Or perhaps he followed his friend Mickey Dora, surfing the point breaks of the world, one week in Ecuador, another in South Africa. Where he disappeared to for so many years no one seems to know, but in recent months he has resurfaced, beginning to paint his harmonious scenes of shepherds and their flocks grazing in the foothills below crumbling medieval castles once again. He is in many ways typical of the gifted young artists and craftsmen of the 1960's generation. No lover of the modern art imposed by traditional art schools, Peterson set about teaching himself through a strict, self-imposed curriculum. He honors an allegiance to the classical techniques of the 17th century while steadfastly maintaining his own artistic individuality. Studying the lives and techniques of the great masters of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, as well as visiting both American and European museums, gave Peterson a strong foundation in art history.Best known for his landscapes, Peterson recreates on canvas life the way it was long ago in England and Central Europe. Shepherds, boatmen, peasant, towers and castles looking over green valleys, lakes and woodlands are all common subjects for the artist. Comparable in quality to many of yesterday's fine works, Peterson seems to surge forth as a haunting voice from the past, from a time when life was simpler.Like the early English artists, Peterson also works often on small canvases. He does not paint from pictures, but draws upon his extensive knowledge and memory of scenes from nature and the images engraved on his memory of his frequent trips to Europe. He has commented, "I have a good memory for faces, places and objects I see". It is this same keen memory which enables him to play pieces on piano by ear of all time great composers.
