Description: Justin II and Sofia | AE Follis Reference: SB 379, MIB 56-57 Date: 577-578 CE Obverse: Blundered legend; Justin left and Sophia right, seated facing on double-throne, both nimbate, each holding a long sceptre , between them a cross on globe Reverse: Large, upper case M, ANNO to left, cross above, regnal year (XIII = 577-578 CE) to right, gamma (officina) below, THEUP mintmark in exergue Mint: Antioch Size: 32.1 mm Weight: 14.83 grams Terminal regnal year for Justin II. He had adopted as his general Tiberius II as Caesar and heir in 574 CE. In 578 CE, within a year of this coin being produced, Justin II elevated Tiberius II to Augustus and shortly thereafter died. Justin II was Justinian I's immediate successor and his reign was fraught with foreign policy issues. Trying to match the legacy of his uncle, Justinian I, Justin suspended tributes to the Empire's belligerent neighbors. This ultimately backfired and resulted in renewed war with the Persians and a Lombard invasion of Italy. At the end of his reign, Justin II would suffer a mental breakdown and power would de facto be transfered to his wife Sofia and his adopted son, the general Tiberius II.
