A famous military commander, Nicephorus II gained the throne five months after the death of Romanus II. As emperor, Nicephorus II oversaw considerable expansion of Roman power in the East. He conquered Cilicia and retook the islands of Crete and Cyprus, opening the path for subsequent Byzantine incursions into Upper Mesopotamia and the Levant. These accomplishments earned him the nickname "Pale Death of the Saracens". However, these military exploits placed a heavy burden on the imperial treasury and Nicephorus become unpopular with his subjects. Ultimately, he was assassinated by his former comrade, John Tzimisces (Et tu, Brute?). Nonetheless, his actions greatly contributed to the resurgence of the Byzantine Empire during the 10th century.
