Description: Carus | AE Antoninianus Reference: RIC V 125 Date: 282-283 CE Obverse: IMP C M AVR CARVS P F AVG: Bust of Carus, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right Reverse: VIRTVS AVGGG: Carus, draped, cuirassed, standing right, holding parazonium in right hand and receiving Victory on globe from Jupiter or Carinus or Numerian standing left, holding sceptre. Gamma (officina ) below, XXI in exergue Mint: Antioch Size: 20.7 mm Weight: 4.02 grams INSCRIPTION ERROR. A very nice coin of a scarce emperor who died after being allegedly being struck by lightening while on campaign against the Persians. The reverse inscription is interesting as "AVGGG" advertises the fact that there are three Augusti: Carus and his two sons, Carinus and Numerian. However, Carinus was only elevated to Augustus in 283 CE and Numerian wasn't elevated to Augustus until AFTER Carus' death. Furthermore, coins of Numerian exist bearing this exact reverse legend but with an obverse legend indicating his rank is Caesar (NOB CAES). Given that these coins were only struck at Antioch, it seems to be a localized error on the part of the Syrian mint officials. Overzealous cleaning has stripped the attractive black patina in some high points. The situation of having three Augusti arose several times during the late Roman period. The first time was in 209 when Geta joined his father and brother, and again in the late 4th - early 5th centuries when the family of Theodosius included three Augusti.
