Description: Hierocaesareia, Lydia | AE16 Reference: RPC III 1854, BMC 6 Date: 54-138 CE Obverse: ΠΕΡϹΙΚΗ; Artemis Persica right, with bow and quiver at left shoulder Reverse: ΙΕΡΟΚΑΙϹΑΡΕΩΝ; stag standing right Mint: Hierocaesareia, Lydia Size: 15.7 mm Weight: 3.00 grams Semi-autonomous coinage from western Anatolia. A very fine provincial pronze featuring a stag and Artemis Persica, or the Persian Artemis, a synchronistic diety formed from the merger of Greek and Persian religious beliefs. She had an ancient temple at Hierocaesareia (originally Hieracome) and was an integral part of the local culture. It should be no surprise then that she was selected to adorn the local coinage. Persic Artemis is depicted in ancient art as a winged female with a lion on either side of her and numismatic images of her (as is the case here) were often accompanied by the legend ΠΕΡΣΙΚΗ.Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
