Description: Scarce Chicano Classic, InscribedThe Road to Tamazunchale Author: Arias, Ron Title: The Road to Tamazunchale Publication: Reno, NV: WCPR [West Coast Poetry Review], 1975. First Edition Edition: First Edition Description: Trade paperback. An inscribed copy of one of the essential Chicano novels of the 1970s, in the very scarce first edition.Arias, a staff writer for People magazine, won the 1974–75 UC Irvine Chicano Literary contest with an excerpt from this book, which adapted the style of Latin American magical realism to the Latino experience in the United States. The novel went through three printings from WCPR, which seldom published novels; it was reissued in hardcover by the Chicano publisher Pajarito Press, then in paperback by the Bilingual Review Press (which still publishes it today), and also by Anchor Books. The first printing (this copy) is bound in saddlestitched (stapled) plain printed orange wrappers; the second printing from WCPR is perfectbound in plain printed orange wrappers; the third issue is perfectbound in tan wrappers that add blurbs to the rear cover, and the fourth is also perfectbound in orange wrappers, but with a cover illustration. Published as issue 16 (vol. 4, no. 4) of the West Coast Poetry Review. [1–11] 14–109 [110: blank] pages. The foreword by Tomás Rivera is titled "Forward," which may or may not be an error. The price on the back cover is $3.00. Near fine. First edition (first printing). Near fine in stapled wrappers; inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "Romaine, I liked deliberating (?) beside you. Ron. 4-14-77." This first printing is quite scarce and signed copies turn up infrequently. I most recently sold a signed first printing in 2002.
