Born in Czernowitz in the Bukovina, she lived through its tumultuous history of belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Kingdom of Romania, and eventually the Soviet Union. She was torn between her home land, caring for her ailing mother, and the United States, and finally settled in West Germany. Ausländer owned only two suitcases throughout her life.[1] Her work spans from expressionism over Neue Sachlichkeit to modern.
