These are exotic, organically grown. The pictures of the plants in pots are exact plants - that you will get. Other pics flowering are of my mother plant in bloom. And last pic is the fruit this plant will set after flowering! It’s an amazing plant! In south Florida this plant has been in bloom for me almost year round now. Pereskia grandifolia is more commonly known as the Rose Cactus but also by other names: Cancer Cactus, Pray for Us (Ora Pro Nobis) Guamacho Morado, and Quiabento Sabonete. The plant earned the name “Cancer Cactus” because according to tradition it was used in severe cases of cancer which did not respond to any other treatments other than prayer. There is research in literature (GOOGLE PLANT!) for those wishing to do further investigation. I researched this plant on internet & it’s pretty amazing. Rose Cactus is botanically classified as a cactus, but grows as a shrub or small tree and if untrimmed, can grow between 6 and 16 feet tall. I grow it in pots so I can keep it neatly shaped as a specimen plant. And I can provoke and enjoy more blooms by feeding bloom fertilizer. Rose Cactus (Pereskia grandifolia) Sun-loving and easy to grow, these beautiful rose-pink single flowers, centered by yellow stamens, emerge successively from dense terminal clusters. Grows beautifully and effortlessly in zones 10 through 11 and is usually evergreen but can be deciduous if temperatures drop below 50 F. I grow in pots on several different patios each receiving at least 4 hrs full sun. South Florida is crazy hot & summer sun can roast a chicken OUTSIDE in 15 min, so I shelter it from noon-5pm daytime sun in summer. Up north can grow in full sun (must water) and bring in to overwinter. A rounded crown is typical of this species. Pereskia is native to areas of eastern Brazil and many other areas of South and Central America where it is cultivated for it's very attractive rose-like flowers. Flowers can range from pink to purplish-pink, up to 2 inches in diameter with yellow stamens in the center of multiple flower clusters that can be seen blooming especially during the summertime. Each of my flower stalks resemble a bridal bouquet and I have had 9 stalks blooming on the mother plant with 10-15! Buds per “cluster” at one time! A fleshy “pear shaped” fruit that ranges from 2 to 4 inches long follows the flower clusters. The fruit of this variety is green at maturation but some fruits can mature yellow or red. Leaves of the Rose Cactus are edible and may be added to salads or cooked like spinach. Black to brown colored spines, typical of Cactus, can be found rising from the areolas in the leaf axils. She has thorns. SOIL: Like many cactus, Rose cactus can tolerate fair to poor quality soil but will do best in a rich and well drained soil. It has been known to perform best in a mix of 2 parts peat moss, 1 part loam and 2 parts sand or perlite. I have grown mine in both cactus soil mix, & also regular potting mix with equal amounts of perlite and sand for drainage and a handful of cow manure and it grows incredibly well. So pretty much they are not fussy BUT the better the soil & drainage, the more blooms you seem to get! I also give mine liquid bloom fertilizer once every two weeks because I can not get enough of those beautiful blooms. During the hotter months, despite the fact that it is in the cactus family, this plant will do best if you can keep the soil moist or at least from drying out. SUNLIGHT: Full sun to partial sun allows Rose cactus to thrive. It does however tend to appreciate afternoon shade in areas with excessively heated summers. WATERING: Like most cactus, Rose cactus is somewhat drought tolerant but does best if the soil is kept moist, not sopping, just not drying out so it wilts especially during very hot summers. Water should not be allowed to pool in the roots of this plant or it can suffer root rot which is so typical of many succulent plants but especially the cactus family. Water when the soil is dry by using the finger test. Stick your finger into the soil bed as far as you can and if your finger comes out totally dry then it's time to water. Restrict water during the winter time and if your Rose cactus is potted bring it indoors if temperatures drop below 50 F. FERTILIZER/FEEDING: Most cactus do not need heavy fertilizing and will do well but if you want to stimulate more blooms like I do—then any good bloom fertilizer will bring out the best in your Rose cactus. ***PLEASE NOTE***: These are living plants. I lovingly raise them then hope they go to a great home. They are crazy healthy, robust and I honorably describe and photograph the exact plant you get! I always try my best to insure that all plants are packaged with great thought and care. However, during their transit, they can get some damage (package mishandling/leaves breaking/losing their color). Plants like these are able to bounce back once they get some water, are removed from their dark shipping box & brought into the light (please allow to receive indirect sunlight (place in shade or dappled shade) until they recover and acclimate to their new environment after being in a box for a couple of days. They come from the sun tropics, so just baby them for a week or two. I am not a nursery just an avid gardener. BUT if in transit something should occur out of my control, just contact me within 48 hrs of delivery, send a picture of damage of original packaging & we will work out. This is not a business, it’s a passion. Smoke & pesticide free Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
