Stone's Duplex Single Plate Newspaper Printing Press, that could both print & fold newspapers! Machinery was manufactured by the Duplex Printing Press Company, located at 108 S. McCamly St. The Duplex Printing Press Company, inventors and manufacturers of newspaper printing presses, shipped their mammoth machines around the world. The Duplex printing press was invented by E.L. Ford and patented in 1877, and was a flat bed web press that ranked between cylinder presses and rotary presses. The Duplex Printing Press Co. was founded in 1884 by I.L. Stone to manufacture the revolutionary Cox newspaper printing press. At one point, Duplex was the world's largest press manufacturer., and the firm was at one time one of Battle Creek's largest industries. The factory complex eventually covered 12.9 acres from South McCamly Street to South Washington Avenue, employed hundreds of Battle Creek men and women for more than 50 years, and sold presses worldwide.
