This is a GUARANTEED ORIGINAL badge from circa 1990s, NOT a recent replica. The badge is very well-made, in solid brass and high-quality “hot-baked” enamels, and measures 46.7 x 27.9 mm. The overall shape represents the Soviet state security insignia of shield and sword. The center medallion is a separate superimposed part. The inscription in the royal-blue band (the traditional KGB color) reads “Association of Veterans of the Group ‘Alpha’”. The badge is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. The enamel shows no visible wear; the raised details are perfect and crisp, the brass is free of blemishes. The screw post is full length and includes the original screw plate. Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference. Formed in 1974, the Alpha Group was the most elite and iconic of all the Soviet Spetsnaz (special forces) units. During the 1970s and 80s, the Alpha was involved in a number of high-profile anti terrorist operations such as preventing hijacking of civilian airliners and rescuing hostages. In December 1979, members of the Alpha stormed the Presidential Palace in Kabul, overthrowing the government of the Afghan dictator Hafizullah Amin and precipitating the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In 1991, the officers of the Alpha refused to follow the order to storm the “White House” parliament building in Moscow and by doing so, doomed the anti-Gorbachev coup to failure.
