It celebrates the battle in 1600 which decided the last Shogunate to rule Japan. The victory by Tokugawa Ieyasu over his rivals ensured that Japan would remain a feudal country ruled from Edo (present day Tokyo). Only 28 of these magnificent pieces exist. The concerned pen has never been used nor inked. It comes together with all original boxes, papers and packaging. There is a minor chip on the right corner of the display box (see photos). "Samurai Battle" Series The military dictators of Japan between 1185 – 1868 (almost 700 years) were known as Shogun. They were "Commanders in Chief of the expeditionary force against the Barbarians" and they were de facto rulers of Japan although they were nominally appointed by the Emperor in ceremonial formality. The administration (government) was called a Shogunate. Kamakura shogunate - 1185-1333Muromachi shoqunate - 1336-1573Azuchi-Momovama period - 1573-1603Tokugawa shogunate - 1603-1868 Shogunates were dynamic with power always shifting and authority was often ambiguous! The Emperor had theoretically the ownership of the land but the system had a feudal element with lesser territorial Lords pledging allegiance to greater ones.Samurai were rewarded for their loyalty with agricultural surplus (rice or labour services). Samurai were not land owners and the hierarchy held together through loyaltybetween them and their subordinates. Many famous Samurai battles were won and lost during the 700 year early history of Japan. Working closely with Maki- artist Ikki Moroike, the Sailor Pen is proud to introduce the "Samurai Battles" series to commemorate some of the most well-known and important of them. This time we focus on the Battle of Sekigahara and the second Samurai theme will be "Ganryujima." Then other two themes will follow. Battle of Sekigahara The battle of Sekigahara was probably the most famous decisive Samurai battle that led to the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified Japan and exerted power and influence. He had two major rival factions, one led by Tokugawa leyasu and the other Ishida Mitsunari. After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the relationship between these two groups deteriorated significantly. In 1600, Sekigahara (which divides eastern and western Japan geographically), became the battlefield fought between the Eastern Army (Tougun) of Tokugawa Ieyasu and the Western Army (Seigun) of Ishida Mitsunari. The Eastern Army consisted of some 80.000 soldiers including famous samurai Lords such as Kato Kiyomasa and Fukushima Masanori, who did not like the bureaucratic Ishida Mitsunari. The Western Army had 120.000 fighters including famous samurai Lords such as Mori Terumoto and Ukita Hideie.Tokugawa Ieyasu concluded secret agreements prior to the battle with some of the Western Army (Daimyo) going over to the Eastern Army. The turning point was Kabayakawa Hideaki’s treachery.Kobayakawa, who owned many soldiers had also received the offer from Ieyasu to switch sides. He and his army changed sides to the Eastern Army once he came under attack from Ieyasu's warning shots.Later, other samurai Lords who originally fought against the Eastern Army followed Kobayakawa's decision and attacked the Western Army. The Eastern Army led by Tokugawa Ieyasu won the battle and later he was appointed 'Shogun' (great general who subdued the barbarians) in 1603 by the Emperor. In this way, Tokugawa Ieyasu gained power to rule the entire country and the Tokugawa era lasted two and a half centuries - thus securing peace and prosperity. The battle of Sekigahara is regarded as the last battle in the age of civil wars in the long history of Japan.
