Artist Bio; Sandu Liberman was a Romanian-born Israeli painter known for his depictions of dancers, city life, and nudes. His portraits often feature women in prayer framed by votive candles. Born in 1923 in Yasi, Romania, Liberman began exhibiting his work as a young man. He took part in state-sponsored shows between 1946 and 1953, receiving the gold medal at the International Art Festival of Romania in 1952. Settling in Israel in 1962, he received many commissions from the Israeli Government to paint portraits of high-ranking officials. The artist died in 1977 in Israel. MEDIUM; This is a beautiful lithograph from prolific painter and printmaker Sandu Liberman. The litho is pulled from a stone, which means the image was drawn and painted on to the stone and after an exhaustive chemical treatment process done in many steps the print can be pulled and made in to an edition. The wonderful thing about Lithography, traditional lithography that is, is the greasy oil mediums that are used to make the images. One of these is called touche. Touche is a liquid, similar to watercolor that can be used to create light or heavy washes or any medium in-between. But when they dry, they leave these fantastic roticulations, much as watercolor does when large amounts of pigment are left to swim in wet pools. You can see these haloing the young woman's face and head. You can tell the artist has spent a lot of attention on small but critical details of the portrait.
