The band scored a hit in the United States with the song "The Warrior", which peaked at No. 7 in 1984. Other hits were "Goodbye to You" (1982 - No. 65 US), "Love's Got a Line on You" (1983 - No. 59 US), "Hands Tied" (1984 - No. 41 US), and "Beat of a Heart" (1985 - No. 41 US).[1] History Scandal was formed in New York City in 1981 by guitarist Zack Smith, who also wrote most of the band's hits. The other initial members included: bassist Ivan Elias (1950–1995), guitarist Keith Mack, keyboardist Benjy King, (1953-2012) drummer Frankie LaRocka (later replaced by Thommy Price), and singer Patty Smyth.[2] Bon Jovi lead singer Jon Bon Jovi also briefly played guitar for the band in 1983. The band had much success early on but due to struggles within the group and their record company, it slowly dissolved—losing member after member. By the time "The Warrior" tour hit the road in 1984, all that remained of the original lineup were Smyth and Mack. Scandal broke up shortly after the tour ended. The group (minus Ivan Elias, who died of cancer in June 1995; he was replaced by Kasim Sulton) reunited in 2004 for VH1's Bands Reunited show and did a string of concerts on the United States East Coast culminating in a show at Irving Plaza in their home city (New York) on February 9, 2005.[3] During the summer of 2006, the band (excluding Price and Sulton) reunited again for VH1's "We Are the '80s" tour, playing a string of large - mainly outdoor - venues and earning critical acclaim.[4] During the summer and fall of 2007, they toured again (this time without Zack Smith). In July 2008, Billboard reported the upcoming release of new music by Patty Smyth and Scandal[5] (featuring original members Keith Mack and Benjy King). At a performance in Dewey Beach, Delaware on August 3, 2008, Smyth indicated Scandal would be releasing a new five song EP in the near future. Scandal also performed one of their new songs, "Trust in Me". Other new titles include "Make It Hard" and "End of the Girl". Patty Smyth & Scandal debuted their first single as a band ("Hard for You to Love Me", also referred to as "Make It Hard") in over 24 years on January 17, 2009 in Ridgefield, Connecticut to a standing ovation. Smyth stated the song will be available to purchase digitally in February 2009, with the new EP to follow shortly. However, the single has been indefinitely delayed as the EP will be expanded to a full-length album, according to Smyth's blog in May 2009.[6] As of December 2011, the only new music released was "Silent Night", their cover of the Christmas classic, which was featured in the NCIS Season 9 Christmas episode, "Newborn King" and subsequently available for purchase on the band's official website.[7] Original drummer Frankie LaRocka died in 2005 after undergoing surgery. Original keyboardist Benjy King died on September 20, 2012, from injuries sustained in an accident.[8] Band members Current members Patty Smyth - lead vocals (1981–1985, 2004–present) Keith Mack - guitar (1981–1985, 2004–present) Tom Welsch - bass (2006–present) Eran Asias - drums (2006–present) Former membersBenjy King - keyboards, guitar (1981–1984, 2004-2012; died 2012) Zack Smith - guitar (1981–1984, 2004–2006) Ivan Elias - bass (1981–1984; died 1995) Frankie LaRocka - drums (1981–1982; died 2005) Thommy Price - drums (1982–1984, 2004–2006) Jon Bon Jovi - guitar (1983) Kasim Sulton - bass (2004–2006) Discography Albums Scandal (EP) (1982) - No. 39 U.S. (RIAA: Gold) Warrior (1984) - No. 17 U.S. (RIAA: Platinum) Compilations Scandalous (1992) We are the '80s (2006) Guitarist Zack Smith formed the mainstream pop/rock band Scandal after playing in various groups, including ones that featured Dee Murray and Davey Johnson of the Elton John band. Scandal's lineup was secured in 1982, with the addition of vocalist Patty Smyth; the rest of the band included bassist Ivan Elias, guitarist Keith Mack, keyboardist Benji King, and drummer Frankie La Rocka. After opening for acts like the Kinks and Hall & Oates, the band released their debut single, "Goodbye to You," in 1982; their self-titled debut album followed soon afterward. The Warrior was released two years later. The title track was a Top Ten hit and the album went platinum. However, Smyth left for a solo career the following year, causing the band to break up. 1st Album: According to legend, the video for "Love's Got a Line on You" cost less than 20 dollars to make and features an unknown Jon Bon Jovi posing as Scandal's guitarist. Columbia signed the band based on the clip and the cut, and Scandal went on to become the biggest-selling EP in Columbia history. But since side one's brilliant one-two punch, "Goodbye to You" and "Love's Got a Line on You," is available on the comprehensive Patty Smyth collection Greatest Hits -- Featuring Scandal, this platter may not be top priority. Beyond those two wavy essentials hides "Win Some Lose Some," which forecasts Smyth's descent into the blasé commercial arena; this is standard rock fare penned by the charmed Canadian combo of Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance (along with Loverboy lead stringer Paul Dean). Smyth helps actual guitarist Zack Smith (who wrote the front's stunning singles) compose the flip's two-fer: "She Can't Say No" and "Another Bad Love." Not bad by any means, but again, the above Smyth compilation holds all the average fan needs. So, there are two albums to track down to complete your Scandal, assuming you do not already have them both. Warrior is the best place to start because of its Top Ten hit title track. "Shooting down the walls of heartache. Bang! Bang!" is 1980s pop genius, and that song does sound fresh. If you are hoping to have heard any of the other nine songs on this surprising platinum album, well, move along, move along. These aren't the songs you are looking for. She first came into national attention in the band Scandal. She went on to record and perform on her own. Her distinctive voice and New Wave image gained broad exposure through video recordings aired on cable music video channels such as MTV. Her debut album Never Enough was well received, and generated a pair of Top 40 hits. In the early 1990s she again reached the Top 10 with the hit single "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," a duet with Don Henley. She performed and co-wrote with James Ingram the song "Look What Love Has Done" for the 1994 motion picture Junior. The work earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Smyth married retired tennis player John McEnroe in 1997. With Scandal After growing up in the Brooklyn neighborhood Gerritsen Beach, Smyth joined Scandal as vocalist in 1981. The band released a self-titled debut EP the next year. Featuring the song "Goodbye to You," it went on to become Columbia Records' biggest selling EP. In 1984, they put out their follow-up, Warrior. Buoyed by MTV airplay, the album peaked at No. 17 on the charts, and the first song off the release, also titled "The Warrior," was a top-10 hit. However, despite their success, internal strife within the group led to their breakup soon afterwards. Solo career Following the end of Scandal, Smyth was invited by her friend Eddie Van Halen to join the band Van Halen to replace David Lee Roth as lead singer. However, she declined the offer, because she was eight months pregnant and "It was just not the right time for me," she says now. "I was a New Yorker, I didn't want to live in L.A. ... and those guys were drunk and fighting all the time." She guest-appeared on The Hooters 1985 album Nervous Night on the song "Where Do the Children Go" as an accompanying vocalist. Smyth released her first solo album, Never Enough, in 1987. It contained her version of the Tom Waits song "Downtown Train," which Rod Stewart would make a hit three years later, and the title track "Never Enough," which was co-written with members of the Hooters and based on a song of the same title that Hooters members Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman had written for their earlier band, Baby Grand. She put out another solo effort in 1992, the eponymous Patty Smyth. Off of that effort, she secured a hit record via a duet with Don Henley of The Eagles, titled "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough." This peaked at number two in the Billboard Hot 100, and was certified gold for sales of 500,000. The album, also certified gold, featured an additional US Top 40 hit with "No Mistakes" and also spawned the minor hit "I Should Be Laughing." Smyth had previously recorded with Henley as a backing singer on several songs on his albums Building The Perfect Beast and The End of the Innocence. Smyth subsequently co-wrote the 1994 song "Look What Love Has Done," nominated for a Grammy and an Academy Award after its inclusion in the soundtrack to the feature film Junior. Further soundtrack commissions resulted in her writing and composing the theme tune, "Wish I Were You," to the 1998 feature film Armageddon. (Her husband, John McEnroe, claimed in his autobiography[1] that she was inspired to write the song by his own attempt at a musical career; she was struck by his excitement at playing music, when her own feelings about the music industry were much more ambivalent.) In 2015, to promote the release of her Christmas album called Come On December, she crowd-funded a campaign to support the Headstrong Project with all the money raised on the pre-orders of her album going to the non-profit.[2] The album featured the single "Broken," and the music video for the single was released just before Veterans's Day, and was filmed on the grounds of a Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter. The album was released on November 20, 2015.[3] Reunion with Scandal In 2004, VH1 recruited Smyth and the surviving members of Scandal for a Bands Reunited episode, resulting in a small reunion tour of concerts on the United States East Coast in 2005. The next year, Columbia/Legacy released a new Scandal compilation CD as part of the We Are the '80s series. The compilation contained three unreleased tracks from the 1982 recording sessions ("Grow So Wise", "If You Love Me", "I'm Here Tonight") as well as "All My Life," previously available on the flip side of "Goodbye To You". In July 2008, Billboard reported the upcoming release of new music by the band[4] (featuring original members Keith Mack and Benjy King). They debuted their first single as a band ("Hard for You to Love Me," also referred to as "Make It Hard") in over 24 years on January 17, 2009 in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Personal life Smyth has a daughter, Ruby, with her first husband Richard Hell. She met John McEnroe in 1993; their daughter Anna was born in 1995, and the couple married in 1997. They have since had another daughter, Ava.[5] Discography Albums Never Enough (1987) No. 66 U.S. Patty Smyth (1992) No. 47 U.S. Greatest Hits – Featuring Scandal (1998) Come On December (2015)[6] After leaving Scandal in 1984, vocalist Patty Smyth waited three years before launching her solo career with the Never Enough album. Smyth returned to the top of the charts in 1992 with "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," a duet with Don Henley; the single hit number two and went gold. He has played drums in a number of bands, including Scandal, Billy Idol, Blue Öyster Cult, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and is an in-demand session drummer. History Price was already on the road drumming by the age of 16. One of his first prolific gigs was playing drums for the band Scandal. He performed on the band's classic Warrior album before moving on to Billy Idol. In 1986, he started drumming for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and he's been a member of the band for the past 28 years, even though he was originally just a studio musician. On the side, Price formed the band Price/Sulton with his childhood friend and music partner Kasim Sulton. They cowrote the music and Price played guitar and did vocals. They released a full-length album on CBS Records called Lights On. The song "No T.V. No Phone" was featured in the 1987 film The Allnighter, starring Susanna Hoffs.[1] Price is currently drumming in his own band in New York City. They recently finished recording an EP, Sex, Drums & Rock ’n’ Roll, and some of their songs are featured in the soundtrack of Sweet Life, a film with Joan Jett.[2] [3] [4] Band activity Joan Jett (1986–present) Love Crushed Velvet (2007-present) Billy Idol Mink DeVille (Coup de Grâce, 1981; Live at Montreux 1982 DVD, 2008) Scandal (drums) (1982–1984, 2004–2005) Flame David Drew band Chris DeMarco (1979-1984) Studio Work Peter Wolf Enrique Iglesias Frank Wright The Waterboys Debbie Harry Roger Daltrey Ric Ocasek Ronnie Spector Blue Öyster Cult The Psychedelic Furs Mink DeVille Ron Wood Steve Lukather John Waite Sylvester Cycle Sluts from Hell Spread Eagle Michael Monroe D. He was a member of Scandal, playing drums on their debut EP, and, at various stages, played the drums with Bon Jovi, David Johansen, Bryan Adams, and John Waite. In the 1990s, he became an A&R man and producer with his most notable work being with the Spin Doctors on their breakthrough album Pocket Full of Kryptonite. Musical history LaRocka started his career playing drums with David Johansen on Johansen's self-titled album from 1978. He joined Scandal in 1982 and played on their self-titled album of the same year as well as earning credit on John Waite's Ignition album. LaRocka toured with Bryan Adams on his 1983 world tour, and was part of the band when they appeared that year live in concert on the legendary televised Rockpalast show (also broadcast live on European radio). Bon Jovi opened for Scandal in a 1984 tour which led to that band being signed to Polygram Records. La Rocka played drums on their 1984 Bon Jovi album. After parting company with Scandal, he returned to session work playing on sessions by John Waite and in 1985 appearing with him in his band on TV shows like Solid Gold. In the early '90s, LaRocka played drums with Company of Wolves, a straight-ahead rock band signed to Mercury Records. Frankie also signed a girl group from London called NeverBlue Managed by Christopher Waller, Tasha Leaper, Lisa Hurley and Susan Motley. The group worked with Brian Rawlings, famed for Cher's Believe album. NeverBlue was signed to Straight Line Records under Atlantic Records. A&R and production work LaRocka's first stab at production was with Irish band Silent Running, whom he signed while working in the A&R department at Atlantic Records. He also played drums on their album Deep. He began working for Sony Music and one of his first signings was the Spin Doctors. He produced their 1991 debut Pocketful of Kryptonite. The album sold slowly at first but it eventually became a hit after their song Little Miss Can't Be Wrong started picking up airplay on MTV and radio. The follow-up single Two Princes was a top ten hit and the album reached a peak of #3 on the Billboard charts in 1993. LaRocka produced subsequent albums for the Spin Doctors but they failed to achieve the same success. He produced the soundtrack of the 1993 movie Philadelphia. It reached #12 on the Billboard 200 album chart and featured a top ten single hit in the Bruce Springsteen song Streets of Philadelphia. Springsteen also won an Academy Award for Best Song as well as a Golden Globe. Neil Young was also nominated for an Academy Award for his track Philadelphia and the album also featured tracks by Peter Gabriel and the Spin Doctors. By the end of his career at Sony, LaRocka was vice president of the A&R department. He was back playing drums for a New York band Hot Monkey Love and with Noel Redding on a 2002 live album recorded at Prague. He also had an independent production company, Straight Line Productions, and had signed the band happyendings to J Records where they were recording their debut record. LaRocka died after undergoing heart surgery in New York in May 2005.
