Scarce 1791 LAVATER Hand-Colored Folio Engraving: PORTRAITS OF LIONS 2

Description: Rare 1820 Hand-Colored Folio Copper-Plate Engraving from: E S S A Y SON P H Y S I O G N O M Y DESIGNED TO PROMOTE THE KNOWLEDGE AND THE LOVE OF MANKIND BYJ O H N C A S P A R L A V A T E R This superb 2nd hand-colored folio engraving of portraits of lions originates from John Caspar Lavater's epic work on Physiognomy, which aside from its subject & theories, had striking, famous engravings by important artists, including William Blake. About the Volumes: The full title of this work translated from the German Physiognomische Fragmente to 'English to 'Essays on Physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and love of mankind illustrated by more than eight hundred engravings executed by, or under the inspection of, Thomas Holloway...'The work is a classic pseudo-scientific analysis of the human face and its relation to inner character. It is highly valued for its engraved illustrations by Henry Fuseli, Daniel Chodowiecki, Thomas Holloway, Francesco Bartolozzi, and William Blake.The fame of this work, which found admirers in France and England as well as Germany, rested largely upon the handsome style of publication and the accompanying illustrations. These engravings were raged about in England at the time, many of them are quite striking & expressive images, & included a series of animals, of which I'm listing a collected grouping. About the Artist:This one isn't signed, but I'm assuming it's also by Johann Rudolph Schellenberg (1740 – 1806), a Swiss artist, writer and entomologist best known for his illustrations of insects. During his career he performed illustrative work for Johann Heinrich Sulzer, Johannes Gessner, Johann Kaspar Lavater and Johann Kaspar Füssli. He illustrated a number of entomological works. The municipal library in Winterthur has about 4000 of his insect watercolors. About the Author: Johann Kaspar (or Caspar) Lavater (1741 – 1801) was a Swiss poet, writer, philosopher, physiognomist and theologian. Lavater was born in Zürich, and was educated at the Gymnasium there.Lavater is most well known for This work in the field of physiognomy, Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe, published between 1775 and 1778. He introduced the idea that physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types.Lavater is attributed with catalyzing a golden age for silhouettes through this work in physiognomy. According to him, the character of a person could be elucidated through examining their “lines of countenance”. About the Plate:Every part of these prints was made by hand: Hand drawn & engraved on Copper or steel which was hand-mined, smelted & rolled, printed onto handmade cotton rag paper, inked & colored with hand-ground pigments individually by hand, & they were usually hand sewn into handmade leather-bound books. It is very rare to find plates from this work from the full-sized folio version, & I've almost never seen them hand-colored like these. Condition:Appears to be in excellent condition for a centuries-old engraving. The hand-coloring appears sharp & brilliant. Little age-toning character or foxing for a print this old. A very clean plate as these go. Please peruse the detailed photos. These prints are very old & may have minor imperfections expected with age, such as some typical age-toning of the paper, oxidation of the old original watercolors, spots, text-offsetting, artifacts from having been bound into a book, etc. Please examine the photos & details carefully.Text Page(s): This one comes without original text page(s).
