Description: Offered for your consideration is a scarce vintage Tommer BC9S 9" carving knife. Tommer knives were of excellent quality and they offered fine performance. However, they were not around for very long and they've become very difficult to find. These knives bear similarities in both quality and build to Chicago Cutlery knives...and for good reason, as Tommer was started by some former Chicago Cutlery executives. They are very similar in design, although they tend to be a bit heavier in build than the Chicago Cutlery knives and the wood has a higher level of finish. This particular knife is from their Challenger series. Though I've owned quite a few examples of several different models of Tommer knives over the years, I've only seen a handful from this series and I suspect it was a short-lived series. A couple significant differences from Tommer's original series and the Chicago Cutlery knives are the mirror polished blades and laminated hardwood handles. The knife has seen light use and remains in excellent condition with no problems at all. The long, sturdy blade was crisply ground from high-carbon stainless steel and polished to a deeply mirrored finish. The blade is free of any errant grinder marks or harsh sharpening abrasions with just a few fine, hairline sharpening abrasions as shown. It has been lightly sharpened and shows minimal sharpening loss. The edge is free of any nicks, chips, dings, or damage and remains very nice with just a bit of normal wear. It remains somewhat sharp and the knife is ready for immediate use, although a quick touch-up would have it razor-sharp in no time. The tip is intact and original with no blunting, burrs, or bending. The thick laminated wood handle remains rock-solid and it has a great look all the way around. The wood was very nicely finished and It shows none of the dishwasher fade/bleaching that's so common to wood handles. It also shows none of the associated gapping or warping with the wood remaining tight to the tang over the entire length. The silky-smooth surfaces remain dark and rich with a warm, rich feel in the hand. The thick scales were tightly pinned and they're free of any cracks, gouges, or damage with very little wear. The handle is also free of any water exposure damage from normal sink washing and the wood shows no stains or discoloration. The knife measures 14" in overall length. This would be an excellent replacement piece, expansion piece, or spare for someone with an old Challenger set. Of course, it would also be great for anyone who appreciates fine, American-made cutlery. A very nice, original example of this scarce American made knife!!
