Growing Pyracantha Coccinea, Firethorn Bonsai from Seeds The seed has to be stratified before it will germinate. You can do this by putting the seed in the refrigerator for six weeks. Then you can plant the seed in small containers about 1/16” deep. It will germinate and be ready to be put outdoors either in the fall or early spring. Firethorn will need pruning after the blossoms stop in the summer. Flowers start forming on the branches soon after the blooms stop. If you wait too late to prune, you can actually cut off your developing flowers. It won’t hurt the shrub, which tolerates severe pruning, but you won’t have flowers the next year. Pruning is complicated by the wicked thorns on the branches. Wear long sleeves and gloves and use long handled shears to accomplish the pruning with a minimum of damage to you. Be sure and pick up the pruned pieces promptly so no one steps on the thorns. Because of the thorns, firethorn makes an excellent hedge to screen out unwelcome company. Birds also nest in firethorn, providing a nice show. Avoid pruning to close to a nest in use. You can always come back after the nest is no longer in use.
