Description: Offered is a copy of the massive two-volume set entitled Scott's Last Expedition. This is the Second Edition published by Smith, Elder & Co., London in 1913, the same year that the First Edition was published. The first volume is composed of the journals of Captain Robert F. Scott, leader of the ill-fated expedition that attempted to be the first to reach the South Pole, but were preempted by the Norwegian expedition. The second volume contains the reports of the journeys and scientific works of the expedition. Scott and four other members of the expedition died after reaching the South Pole while attempting to return to their base. These two large volumes are in the original publisher's blue coth, thick quarto size (250 x 170 mm), Volume I: Pp. [xxvi], 633; Volume II: [xiv], 534. The volumes are copiously illustrated with many illustrations and photos, and there are a number of folding maps (which I did not unfold). Condition: Both volumes are in very good condition. The bindings are pretty clean, the spines somewhat dulled, the back covers have a sort of uneven darkening, more noticeable on Volume I. The bindings are tight and secure, the upper corner of Volume I is bumped. There is some slight spotting to the page edges, and a few exposed margins around where the maps are inserted. Provenance: Each volume bears the bookplate of Walter Leslie Farrer, with the latin motto: “Sapientiam Veram Quaero”. This owner was Sir Walter Leslie Farrer (1900-1984), who was private solicitor to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. In Volume II there is a scrap of paper, apparently used as a bookmark, from the legal firm Farrer & Co., dated 1923, which was Farrer’s firm. In Volume I there is a slip of letterhead paper from Randalls Park, Leatherhead "With love from Aunt ?? [I can't make out the name] who presumably gave the book as a gift.
