Description: SELDA (BAĞCAN) – Selda. Pharaway Sounds PHS 018CD. Spanish release. FACTORY SEALED CD. Originally issued in 1979. This edition issued in 2013. Her 4th album. Turkey’s Joan Baez. Remastered sound with liner notes by Angela Sawyer of Weirdo Records. DESCRIPTION: Imagine if Julia Child had marched against Vietnam, stood on the steps of the Pentagon & placed a flower in a gun barrel. Selda Bağcan's later records have that same cross of easygoing motherly warmth & righteous anger. This 1979 album (technically her 4th, although 6 of these songs were also released on her third), was recorded when Turkey was at its most politically polarized. Selda was sentenced to a total of over 500 years in prison right about the time it came out. A pile of acoustic guitars & bağlamas all going off at once under a blanket of reverb, with lyrics about blood, wood, mountains, families, and desperate troubles, so it's a thick squirt for a folk album. Selda's voice can either be sultry or really surge with emotion, and when she does belt one, it's oddly high & completely unique. Her reward was the love of Turkey's people, but also nine trials and three prison terms from the right wing military government of the 80s. She could sing in any language and you would still get her meaning from the emotion and sincerity of her performance. Remastered sound and includes an insert booklet with liner notes by Angela Sawyer of Weirdo Records. For your further reading enjoyment and enlightenment I offer the following background on Selda that I put together for one of her other albums: Selda Bağcan or Selda as she is more commonly known, was born in Muğla, Turkey in 1948, is a well renowned Turkish folk music singer, composer, and political activist. She has been one of the most effective performers of Turkish Folk and Folk Rock music for years. Her protest style and leftist, socialist, political views have brought her great public support and recognition yet have caused many problems with the military and government authorities; she was arrested and jailed three times between 1981 and 1984. Selda's lyrics often deal with political struggle as well as the problems and demands of the working class. Her satirical lyrics often times make critical references to contemporary politicians from both the left and right-wings though more often her focus is on the right-wing government(s) and imperialism. She both composes her own songs and updates traditional Turkish Folk songs. Bağcan's covers involve the use of western instruments like acoustic guitar as well as traditional ones like saz or bağlama. She is pictured on the front cover with a saz, which interestingly is an electric model; note the tone control knobs with the pickup in the shadow of her hand. Her modern and universal style in covering the traditional folk songs includes a wide variety of musical styles from progressive and psych rock to traditional sounding accompaniement with just guitar or zaz and her voice. It is this variety of styles that has gained her international appeal, all done with respect for the rich and deep cultural history of her homeland. Because of her powerful and emotional voice, she is known as (and she calls herself) the bitter sound of the Turkish people. She lives in İstanbul and runs her own business under the name Majör Müzik Yapım (Majör Music Production) reissuing much of her material over the years. THIS ITEM IS NEW AND UNPLAYED. Also an unsealed jewel case may show light signs of warehouse/transit storage wear on the outer surface of the jewel case. If an unsealed jewel case is received by me broken, it will be replaced with a new jewel case before shipping; sealed CDs received with minor cracked/damaged jewel cases will be noted as such in the item’s description and will be shipped as is. NEW CD: This item is new and unplayed, but was received from a supplier without being shrink wrapped or cellophane wrapped; more common on imports but also many of the smaller independent US labels do not seal their CDs; some have it both ways (for which I have no prior knowledge of or choice when placing my orders). Other companies use resealable clear outer sleeves which are used on some import and domestic releases. If I receive an item this way it will be shipped as I received it and not opened up. Items received unwrapped are placed inside of a resealable clear outer mylar sleeve at the time they are received. GFC or GF: Gate fold cover, refers to a style of mini-jacket CDs. S/T: Self-Titled 2/1: This denotes that 2 albums are on 1 single CD. REMAST: Remastered. More specific sourcing will follow within the item’s description when available. OOP: Out Of Print. MIX: This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style. XT, XTKS, or #XTKS: Usually in lower case type as part of the title line, denotes bonus tracks on this release (extra track, extra tracks, or the number of extra tracks). ULC, LRC, etc.: Upper Left Corner, Lower Right Corner, etc. used in referencing the area of a defect or blemish to the jewel case or packaging.
