There were many reasons for this development. The most important of these were the low priority of developments in this area, due to differing opinions among the artillery command regarding the ACS, the lack of funding and the lack of a suitable serial tank base for armored tracked vehicles. However, the attention paid to self-propelled artillery by the US Army increased with the creation of US armored troops (July 10, 1940) and the study of the experience of battles of the early World War II, and especially the success of German anti-aircraft guns in Polish and French campaigns. Based on this, a requirement was made to create a high-speed ACS on a crawler chassis, capable of accompanying tank columns on the march. As a temporary solution for armament were adopted ACS M3 and T19 on a semi-tracked chassis, but they were too small to accommodate the necessary weapons and did not meet the requirements for mobility. Medium tank M3 LeeThe history of the M7 began in October 1941, when the head of the Armored Forces, Major General J. Devers, recommended the development of a 105-mm self-propelled howitzer on the chassis of a new medium tank M3, production of which began three months earlier, and the construction of two prototypes. For this purpose, prototypes, designated 105mm Howitzer Motor Carriage T32, were manufactured by Baldwin Locomotive Works and transferred to the Aberdeen test site. The first prototype after preliminary tests was transferred to Fort Knox on February 5, 1942, where the tests continued for another three days. According to the results of the tests, the Armored Force Board of the US Army concluded that after some refinement, the T32 would meet the needs of the army. The first prototype T32 tested at Fort Knox in accordance with the recommendations of the Armored Committee, the thickness of the armor of the cabin was reduced from 19 to 13 mm. In addition, the howitzer was shifted to the right to provide a sector of horizontal guidance of 45 °, allow the gun installation. To reduce the height of the ACS Armored Committee allowed to reduce the maximum angle of elevation to 35 ° compared to 65 ° specified in the original task. Another requirement was to equip the T32 with a 12.7-mm anti-aircraft machine gun. Options were developed with the placement of a folding acetabular installation on the roof of the engine compartment, or turret installation - in one of the corners of the cabin. As a result, the second option was chosen, which required changes in the configuration of the front part of the cabin, which also provided more of its internal volume. The height of the sides and stern of the cabin was reduced by 280 mm, and the front - increased by 76 mm. Due to the change of ammunition it was possible to increase the carrying ammunition from 44 to 57 shots. All these changes were made in February 1942 at the Aberdeen test site in the second prototype T32, which was then sent to the American Locomotive Company for use as a model in serial production. In April 1942, the T32 was adopted as standard, receiving the designation 105mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7.Payment Policy We accept only PayPal Shipping Policy We ship WORLDWIDE.We will ship your purchase to your eBay address using AIRMAIL with TRACKING NUMBER.
