Description: Set of 7 Childs Miniature Dinner Set PlatesMULBERRY PURPLE SLANTED STRIPE Staffordshire England c 1820 This very scarce set of early miniature dinner set plates was made of early English ironstone, decorated with simple yet elegantly etched transfer printed slanted stripe design in lavender or purple sometimes called mulberry finished with pearlware glaze. Two plates measure just 2-3/4 inches with a lobed rim. Three plates measure 3-1/4 inches. One plate and one bowl each measure 4 inches. An extremely uncommon example of early 19th century miniature ironstone made for a childs dinner party and doll house play. The tiny dishes are unmarked except for an impressed Gothic letter R and a tally mark. The pattern name and maker is unknown. We are calling the pattern Slanted Stripe or Barber Pole Stripe. It is an unrecorded pattern attributable to one of the Staffordshire potteries in the early the mid-nineteenth century. Similar dinner sets in Lechler’s book English Toy China and Punchard’s book Playtime Pottery & Porcelain from the UK and US illustrate examples of the same form attributed to Minton. The little purple plates were beloved by generations of children and is in overall very good condition. Stilt marks on the back on some. One small old back chip. No chips cracks or repairs on the front, and only a couple flea bites on the underside of one plate. Typical age related wear from prior use. This is a brilliant rare pattern, and a lovely addition to any collection. Offered as is, as described and as shown.
