These four prints are from a series of six from "A Portfolio of Drawings by Rockwell Kent" Published by Schering Corporation in 1942. A prologue to the prints (not included) read: "ART AND MEDICINE has been intimately associated since ancient times. Invaluable data about the famous physicians of yesterday have been made available through engravings excuted by distinguished artists of the past. The drawings in this portfolio were commissioned by Schering for use in a series of promotion pieces. They were conceived as an expression of the mental symptoms of various diseases. Widespread response to the drawings, coupled with may requests for copies that might be framed, has led the Schering Corporation to issue finely printed limited edition of the drawings as a gift to friends. These four prints make a beautiful set, and have been framed in a gun metal extruded frame and glazed with plexi. All are in excellent condition with minor scratching on a few of the frames. Very scarce, as the portfolio was never commercially available and printed in limited numbers. ROCKWELL KENT Jun 21, 1882 - Mar 13, 1971 (age 88). Born in Tarrytown, New York, Kent was of English descent. Growing up in a genteel family in New York City, Rockwell Kent was a member of the rugged realist school of landscape painters as well as a popular illustrator and printmaker. Kent studied with several influential painters and theorists of his day. His 1930 illustrations for Moby Dick are among his most lasting achievements. He was the first American artist to have work exhibited in the Soviet Union, a reflection of his Communist Party sympathies, which earned him the Lenin Peace Prize in 1967. This espousal of radical politics caused his career to suffer badly in the '50s because his leftist views caused him disdain among many Americans. However, his work, reflecting both realism and modernism, has earned increasing attention from American art historians.
