SHEILA GARDNER Painting MAINE IDAHO MacDowell Colony NH ASL Woman MUSEUM ARTIST

Description: Painterly American Impressionist watercolor on heavy paper by well listed contemporary woman artist Sheila Gardner (Am., 1948-2019) depicting a vibrant, colorful landscape.Unframed painting measures 18 x 24 inches. Signed lower right, “Gardner”. Also signed verso “Sheila Gardner” and titled “Gathering Clouds”.Provenance: Smith, Kline & French, Philadelphia, PA. S,K & F ceased doing business under that name in 1989 (today, they are GlaxoSmithKline). This painting was from the S,K & F corporate art collection as No. 0411.Sheila Gardner’s career as a painter spanned at least five decades and she was a very active artist, so her bio is extensive. I’ve posted it below if you’d like to read through it. She studied at the Art Students League (ASL) in NYC, exhibited with the Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery in NYC and Barridoff Gallery in Maine, was a MacDowell Colony (3 Fellowships) artist in Peterborough, NH and her work can be found today in museums such as the Portland Museum of Art and Boise Art Museum.Gardner lived in France, then Maine by the late 1970’s, and by the mid-80’s also began working / living out West in the Wood River Valley, Blaine County, Idaho (Ketchum and Sun Valley). By the mid-1980’s, Gardner was teaching painting at both the University of Maine and the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (today’s Sun Valley Museum of Arts) in Idaho. From 1985 to present (even though the artist passed away in 2019), Sheila Gardner has been represented by Gail Severn Gallery in Ketchum, Idaho. Ketchum is a world-famous Pacific Northwest skiing destination and some of the famous people who reside there include art collector Steve Wynn, rock stars Steve Miller and Peter Cetera, actors Scott Glenn and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and ski racers such as Picabo Street. Adam West and Ernest Hemingway lived there, too.Excellent, original condition painting was matted and framed under heavy glass until I removed the painting from the framing. It was too big, with the wide mat and frame, to ship, plus the glass made it very heavy not to mention fragile for shipping.Since the cardboard backer has the S,K & F label, but the backer is bigger than the 18 x 24” painting at 26 x 32” (it was backing the wide matting, too), I’ll cut down the backer to approx. 18 x 24” without disturbing the label and ship that to you along with the watercolor. This way, you’ll have the label. This painting has to ship flat, not rolled in a tube, anyway because I feel the watercolor paper is a bit too thick to safely roll.
