Shiitake grows best on oak logs followed closely by sugar maple and other hardwoods.Fresh cut logs should be used to prevent competitor fungi although it is best to allow the lg to rest, off the ground after fresh cutting for 2-3 weeks prior to plugging. This step has been slipped successfully with growers although many still recommend it. I sell customized drill bits with stop collars seperately or combo packs as well which fit all standard sized plugs. They are approx 5/16"X1". The holes are then commonly sealed over with wax although some people have success without this step. Made to order to ensure freshness, these sometimes will take approx 7-10 days to ship although I try to have some in stock ready to ship immediately, large orders of several thousand sometimes wipe out the immediately available inventory.
