Description: First edition in very good condition. There is paper toning and a small bubbled section of cloth in the center of the front cover. The preface states "the custom of naming naval vessels is shrouded in obscurity during the first forty years of our maritime history". If it was obscure then, this is probably the only remaining source to get all of this information in one place. Very rare book with an unusual topic loaded with information that is probably not available anywhere else. It was written by U.S. Naval scholar, Robert W. Neeser. In it, he lists the United States Navy ships of the day and the story behind each ship's name. It also describes the process by which a ship gains its name. It tends to be a much slower mailing process than standard mail. In addition, any employee of the USPS can open the package at ANY time for ANY reason to verify that what is inside is what should be inside. In most cases, the item is properly repackaged but in rare cases it is not, and an item can arrive damaged. As my feedback suggests, I package very carefully. If you receive a damaged item that has the appearance of having been poorly packaged, please contact me prior to leaving feedback so that it can be addressed. PLEASE NOTE: For book sales, I virtually always include a vinyl bag tightly wrapped on the exterior. This is an attempt to prevent any USPS employee from opening the package for inspection as it would be time consuming for them to repackage it. This is done simply because my packaging is done more carefully than their repackaging and also to protect the book from the elements. The vinyl bag covers cardboard protection and you can simply cut the bag open (carefully) and remove the contents. The cardboard protection is also typically held with tape and cutting in the obvious places will allow the cardboard to pop right open, exposing the book (in another protective vinyl bag). Using this method, you should be able to open any book I send in under a minute. No "buzz saw" is required. Thank you
