Sicily, Syracuse, silver tetradrachm, c. 405 BC, unsigned dies by Parmenides

Description: Please note that no orders will be dispatched between 17 and 30 July, in view of our ongoing office move. Orders are welcome in this period and will be dispatched after 31 July. Sicily, Syracuse, silver tetradrachm, c. 405 BC, unsigned dies by Parmenides. Slow quadriga, each horse facing in a different direction, driver being crowned by Nike flying above/the nymph Arethusa facing left, four dolphins around her. 17.0 g. This die pairing is a great rarity; Tudeer cites only two examples, both in museums, and there appears to have been no other example offered at auction since 1991 (NAC 4A, lot 1210, but only "Fine to Very Fine"). The Seaby cataloguer in 1959 considered this coin only to be the third example known; at present one must assume that there are less than 10 examples, and this piece is perhaps the only old provenance coin in private hands. VF or better, old collection tone. Extremely rare and struck from two artistic dies of exceptionally fine style. Tudeer 68 (two specimens cited). ex-Seaby Coin and Medal Bulletin October 1959, A912 (£60)
