Description: This is Sigma's best 500mm telephoto lens - it's an APO design, and is extremely sharp and very solidly built. It's ideal for wildlife photography. The lens is extremely solid and well built, and ideally used on a tripod or monopod. This was Sigma's sharpest long telephoto for many years; only the most recent lenses from Sigma are in the same class. It is an APO (apochromatic), and has no color fringing, just solid, sharp images. I am including both the original 46mm clear filter and a 46mm polarizing filter, which fit in a small drawer near the back of the lens. There is an external wheel to rotate the polarizing filter to optimize the contrast improvement from the filter. The lens has a long built-in foot that provides a lot of stability. The original front lens hood and cover are also included, and a lens cap for the rear. The lens fits Canon EF, but can be adapted to Sony and other mirrorless cameras with the appropriate adapter (e.g., Sigma MC-11 for Sony; Metabones EF to E for Sony, etc.). Performance has been flawless for me with both of those adapters. I have also used this lens on a Fuji GFX with a Fringer adapter with excellent results. I no longer use this lens because I bought the new Sony 300mm. I did test the lens for sharpness prior to listing for sale, and it's a pretty impressive telephoto. The APO optics do indeed prevent color fringing, providing excellent contrast in the images--take a look at the sample photos I included with the listing. It's an impressive lens, and a great value considering what the latest generation telephotos cost. The only downside is that this is a heavy lens, and you'll want a solid tripod or monopod to use with it. It can be used handheld, but it's heavy enough that for most users, some kind of support is best. This lens is sharp from wide open, but improves slightly at f/5.0 and f/5.6. The APO design prevents color fringing from messing up the sharpness. It's the only APO telephoto that Sigma produced in this focal length until recently, so the lens holds up well against most modern competition. Don't confuse this amazing optic with some of the cheaper Sigma telephotos; this one is an amazing performer, one of the best they ever made. There are minor surface marks on the outer barrel, but these are superficial and the lens shows no signs of abuse or mis-handling. The knob that locks the front hood is frozen, but the hood twists on securely. This is factored into my pricing. All optical, electronic, and manual controls operate as they should unless noted otherwise. If you have questions, please feel free to get in touch.
