Description: “THY LOVE IS BETTER THAN WINE” From the Suite “SONG OF SONGS OF KING SOLOMON”, 1975 SIGNED ORIGINAL COLOR LITHOGRAPH BY ISRAELI / FRENCH ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER THEO TOBIASSE (1927-2012) This limited edition color lithograph, titled “Thy Love is Better Than Wine” from the portfolio suite “Song of Songs of King Solomon”, is by the French artist Theo Tobiase, who is known as one of the masters of the Paris School. The lithograph is signed in pencil by the artist below the image in the margin lower right: theo tobiasse. The lithograph is numbered in pencil below the image in the margin lower left: 193/200. The image size of the lithograph measures 25 3/4 x 19 1/2 inches. The lithograph is printed on Arches wove paper with deckle edge on the right and bottom sides. The full sheet measures 29 15/16 x 21 7/8 inches. The sheet also bears the Leon Amiel blind embossed seal in the lower left margin corner. The lithograph comes unframed. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: There is evidence of heavy toning to the sheet front (mat window open area), and the verso has hinge remnants at the top and side edges, otherwise the lithograph image is in very good condition with no evidence of any damage to the image. Théo Tobiasse, born in Israel in 1927, from a Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant family who moved to Paris in 1931. Here Tobiasse completed an apprenticeship at the École des Arts Décoratifs, which was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. After the end of the war, he worked as a graphic designer for the Hermès company in Paris and Nice for 15 years. After his first successful exhibition appearance in Nice, he decided to pursue a career as a freelance artist. His work, which was inspired by the Nouvelle École de Paris, quickly found international recognition and won awards such as the Dorothy Gould Prize in 1961. Tobiasse decided then to devote himself to painting. In 1976 he moved his studio to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and from 1980 he traveled regularly to New York, where he stayed for several months each year. The paintings and prints by Théo Tobiasse, comparable to those by Marc Chagall, often contain themes from Jewish culture, contain allusions to biblical content and deal with erotic fantasies. ___________________________________ ATTENTION!
