Description: Pat Conroy's "The Great Santini," a FIRST EDITION, Personally SIGNED on title page by PAT CONROY, published in 1989 by the Old New York Book Shop Press in Atlanta. [Conroy signed this book at the Sigma Tau Delta Convention which met in Savannah, Georgia---and I witnessed the signature.] Bound with light red boards, the book has its original dust. The book is in FINE condition. Donald Patrick Conroy, who lived from 1945---2016, grew up a Marine brat. After graduating from the CITADEL, he turned to teaching. His first book, "The Water Is Wide" is an account of his experiences in an all-black school. "The Great Santini" is the story of the family of a fighter pilot, BULL MEACHAM who is as tough a disciplinarian at home as on the base. Objections are met with the statement "The Great Santini has spoken." As the oldest child, Ben takes the brunt of his father's criticism. His attempts to stand up for himself or his mother and sister are contemptuously dismissed. His feelings for his father are a mixture of hate and fear, reluctant pride in his prowess, and unacknowledged love. The Marine corps and flying are the most important things in Bull's life. Next come his image as a tough guy, the Catholic Church, his old buddies, his wife and children. Ben is eighteen and a born athlete. So his father's fierce drive for a successful son is concentrated on him and nothing less than perfection is considered acceptable. Ben must learn that in a gme, sportsmanship should go by the board when necessary; what matters is to win, regardless of the means. 536 pages. I offer combined shipping.
