Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement, Harrison’s maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone in a polished steel setting, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, the detent mounted on a long curved gilt arm to allow fine adjustment by a screw. Escape pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gilt hands. Purpose made engine turned silver open face case hallmarked London 1839. Maker’s mark “CBH” and number corresponding to that on the movement.Barraud produced these brass calibre movements incorporating most of the escapements common at the time. Few were made with spring detent escapements as no temperature compensation was used. Steel was only used where necessary to minimise the effect of magnetism. Barraud was highly regarded and one of the makers commissioned to produce chronometers to Mudge's design. See Cedric Jagger's book, Paul Phillipe Barraud.
