Description: This listing is for an authentic, single page from the September 5, 1874 issue of Harper's Weekly magazine. It includes page 745 and the other side, page 746. About the magazine:History depicted in engravings from Illustrated Antique Weeklies- From the mid 1800's to the turn of the century, even before many could read, the extremely popular illustrated newspapers such as Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's Illustrated, and Illustrated London News pictured the news and events of the times. Special artist-correspondents were present at the event to accurately sketch the scene as it was making history. These sketches were rushed to the East Coast publishers whereby skilled artisans engraved them on wood blocks. Within a week after the event the printed illustrated newspapers were in the public's hands. Today their value to collectors is twofold: as historically accurate records, and as exquisitely engraved works of art. Frame this item to create an unusual and interesting art piece for your home.Size is approximately 11 in x 15.5 in Both pages are full sized pictures, so you have to decide which one you want to display. No text other than the title of the print. Page 745: "The Cock of the Walk" depicts a very confident juvenile, standing in his finest clothes with a carnation in his mouth. In the background, one can barely make out two birds near him, and further back stands a building and trees. I believe the artist signature reads, WJ Watson, Jr. Page 746: "The Liverpool Cotton Market" shows several well dressed men standing in or near a nice building, waiting on the market to open. One gentleman is reading maybe the stock report. I guess women did not attend this event because there are one pictured. On the bottom left, the initials, M.F. are printed. Paper is in great shape for its age. All four edges are pretty jagged, though, but could be cut to clean it up. Some browning of the paper and edges. Picture ink is dark and clear. No fading, tears, holes or worn spots in the pictures themselves. . Own this great page today and frame it for your home, gift it to the paper collector, or donate it to a charitable cause. $9.97, plus same or next day shipping for $5.00 after payment is received.
