Once they were the thriving grand-daddies of the big roads; now they are relegated to the backwoods, most colorful survivors of the Rail Age. ARCHIE ROBERTSON rode these trains and tells us about them. Behind the engine that folks in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, indulgently call Tweetsie, on the creaking fifty-year-old coach of Maine's Blueberry Express, through the isolated Moffat Tunnel with the Denver & Salt Lake, he observed not only trains of a bygone era but the people who still ride and love them, the farmers, miners, `drummers,' lumbermen, commuters, and `fans.' AT first glance this would seem to be simply the story of the short-line railroad. `But' (Robertson says of his book), `it's more than a book about railroads. It's about a people and a way of life. It's a book about a sweet and dying kind of travel; an Old America that is still with us while the Drummers' Home at Murphy, North Carolina, sends its porter down to meet "No. 2."' IN addition to the main narrative, there is a complete `picture story' of what it would be like to take a trip on a short-line road. All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad.
