Description: Small mid 19th needlepoint c.1860 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this little needlepoint is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The scene is a winsome one of a young woman standing within a garden setting, holding a kitten whilst its mother looks up, paw raised, at her offspring. This charming tableau is then framed by trees and rose bushes with an ornate set of railings behind and a large country house nestled amongst trees in the distance.There is a sliver of gauze visible to the lower left side edge and one is able to see that it has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a couple of small natural slubs. The needlepoint is behind hand blown glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The needlepoint is contained within its seemingly original good quality rosewood frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with a rich colour with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. As mentioned earlier, the frame retains its original hand blown glass which has a small bubble to the upper right corner. This doesn't show up on the main photos but it is visible as can be seen on the tenth photograph. The penultimate photograph show later black tape which seems to be covering a nail or something similar. Measures - 10 1/4" x 12" (sight size) and 15 1/4" x 17"including the frame.
