This magazine was the brainchild of S. Dillon Ripley, the legendary longtime (1964-1984) Secretary of the Institution, and the co-founder/1st Editor was the renown Edward K. Thompson. The magazine's raison d'etre was basically everything under the sun . . . not about the Smithsonian really, but 'of the Smithsonian'.
