Being a berry, this makes them a safe option for those who have nut allergies. Because they are just fruit, once you have used them up, they can be added to your compost pile or just thrown out in your yard. They are an excellent zero waste option. They are also Hypoallergenic, antibacterial, antifungal! How do Soap Nuts Work? Soapberry husks contain a natural soap, Saponin. When they absorb water, Saponin is released. This is what creates their suds. Saponin is natural and biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Soap nuts dont release all of their Saponin at once, so they can be used, dried out and reused multiple times. You will know that they are exhausted when they lose their color and/or fall apart. Soap Nuts may break in transit or along the way of life, but that doesnt stop them. If you have some soap nut pieces in your back, use them too! You just want the amount of soap nut pieces to equal 4-6 nuts, weighing about .5 ounce. Laundry: 4-6 (.5 oz) nuts in the provided small cotton bag and toss it in the washer with your clothing! Reuse the same nuts 5 or more times. Safe to use in standard and HE machines. Its important to not overload your washing machine and do use hot water. You will want to supplement with a stronger detergent for heavily soiled items. Regular every day wear clothing items get cleaned great. Baby clothes and cloth diapers do great as well. Soap nut liquid is good for getting out light stains. To use soap nuts in washing machine with cold or hard water, let them steep in a glass of hot water before starting your load. Just add that soap nut liquid to the washing machine instead of the nuts themselves. Dishwasher: Just like you would with your laundry, throw the bag of soap nuts in the dishwasher in place of dishwasher detergent or pods. Just place your soap nuts bag in the utensil basket or bottom of unit. I do find that they leave residue behind when they are brand new nuts. For this reason, you can use them a couple of times in the laundry or make some soap nut liquid first and then use those same nuts for your dishwasher. You can still use them 3 or more times. Bath/Shower: Boil 12 soap nuts in 4 cups of water and let gently simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add another 2 cups of water and allow to simmer another 15-20 minutes. Cool, strain and pour the liquid into a squirt bottle. Squirt liquid on a sponge or wash cloth to use in the bath or shower. Soap nut liquid is great for skin and hair. This is even a great option for babies, kids and anyone with skin allergies or irritation like eczema or psoriasis. Save the nuts to be reused. You can allow them to dry out again or reuse them again immediately. Because soap nuts are actually berries, boiling them for their liquid is actually like a fruit juice. It will go rancid in time. If you keep this liquid in the refrigerator it will last 2-4 weeks. Soap Nuts contain Vitamins A, D, E, and K making it great for your hair and skin. If you use this in place of shampoo, be prepared for it to not lather. Typical shampoos contain added lathering agents, but those agents do not add to its ability to clean. It just gives the illusion that it does. So! Get your hair fully wet. Work a generous amount of liquid into your hair and scalp and allow it to sit for a few minutes. (Because its thin and non lathery, being cool from the refrigerator actually helps tell you where it is on your scalp.) Rinse out with water. No conditioner necessary.
