Description: Solidago gigantea is a perennial in the Asteraceae family. A native to Central and Eastern Canada to northeast Mexico. Its common names include Early Goldenrod, Giant Goldenrod, Smooth Goldenrod, and Tall Goldenrod. It is the state flower of Kentucky and Nebraska. You can make tea from the dried leaves and flowers. It can grow to almost 7 feet tall and can spread from underground rhizomes. Leaves are sparse at the base, but several grow on the stems. Flowers appear at the top of the stems in bunches up to several hundred small flowers at one time. They are a bright yellow with disc florets and ray florets with an anice scent from late summer until mid-fall. It prefers full sun to part shade. Keep this one in a container as it can get away from you. Zones 3-8 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
