It's well-reported that the Spawn character was named after his friend. Todd was known for naming a number of characters after friends and family members. Al Simmons would often dress up as spawn and attend signing events with Todd and would always sign "Al Simmons AKA Spawn". The two had a falling out, and in 2012 Todd McFarlane sued Simmons for claiming that he was the inspiration/namesake of Spawn.
