Description: You are bidding on one spectacular lignum vitae wood block or smoothing plane as pictured.The body has an amazing pattern of heartwood and sapwood as can be seen! The wedge is not lignum vitae.The body and wedge are not marked. The body is about 2" wide at the widest point, is about 2-1/8" tall, and is about 7-1/16" in length.The iron is marked "MOULSON BROTHERS CAST STEEL SHEFFIELD". It is about a 32nd under 1-5/8" in width, and about a 32nd under 7" in length. It is a tapered iron, about .165" thick near the sharp edge, and about .105" thick near the upper end. Despite the small size, the plane weighs 1 pound 9.6 ounces on my postal scale. Lignum vitae is so dense that it doesn't float.Condition is very good to excellent, except for a tight crack extending up and back from the left rear corner of the throat. All of the other lines in the body are grain lines and not cracks. The wedge shows some modest wear. The iron is clean below the bottom of the slot, and has some light rust and casting roughness higher up. There are some tiny chips in the sharp edge of the iron to grind out. The front of the chip breaker is also reasonably clean. The iron and chip breaker and wedge all appear to be original to the plane. SHIPPING: 3 pounds when boxed, insurance and delivery signature confirmation are included. No International shipping. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location.
