Description: Spiny TX Engelmannii Purple Santa Rita Opuntia Prickly Pear Cactus Cuttings Lot This listing is for 2 different varieties of Opuntia prickly pear cactus. One pad each of Opuntia violaceae (commonly known as purple Santa Rita) and Opuntia engelmanii (commonly known as Engelmann's or Spiny Texas prickly pear). Planting instructions will be included with your purchase! The first thing you'll need to do is let the pads finish the scabbing-over process by drying out in the shade - that will be detailed out for you in the instructions. Please note: It could take us several days to get your order prepared. We take your cuttings FRESH TO ORDER, and harvest them approximately twice a week. SANTA RITA: Santa Rita prickly pear is one of the most colorful of the Opuntia family. It's moderate sized pads (6" to 8" diameter) are a deep purple color when young, progressing to a blue-green shade with purple margins as they mature. The pads have spines on the margins and glochids (small, fine whisker-like needles) on the face - so this one is to be handled with some caution. This bold prickly pear adds color and texture to any landscape and may achieve 4' of height and 6' of width. Spring / summer flowers are a beautiful bright lemon yellow color, followed by purplish colored small (2") fruit. Native to northern Mexico, this specimen loves full sun and is cold hardy into the mid-teens. The fruit (or pear) of the prickly pear - called a "tuna" - is also edible and is used in jellies and other sweets. ENGELMANN'S: Engelmann’s Prickly Pear is a large, fast growing, and very durable cactus. It has the potential to reach the size of 5’ to 6’ tall and 8’ wide, however, with trimming it can be kept much smaller. The pads of this wonderful plant are ovate shaped and loaded with clusters of 1” stiff, white spines. The pads can range in size from 6” to 12” wide, making it a great barrier or security planting. Because it is a cactus / succulent, it’s water needs are very minimal and it can do quite well in full sun exposure. In the late spring it produces lovely flower clusters ranging in color from yellow to peach. Those flowers become a valuable purple fruit used to create jams, jellies, syrups, drinks and several other delicious food concoctions! This plant is certainly versatile and you will want it in your garden if you live in a moderate temperature climate (sustained temps below 15 degrees Fahrenheit would not be advised)! PLEASE NOTE: we will cut the spines off of the pads that we ship to you for handling purposes. Rest assured that as your plant matures it will grow new spines.
