Description: Lot #0179 "Sprout", Alimited edition etching (#6 of 15 from 1967) by noted and important Japaneseartist Toko Shinoda born in 1913. Ms. Shinoda passed awayin a Tokyo hospital in March of 2021 at the age of 107. She is widelyregarded as possibly the most important artist of the 20th century in Japan andis in major museum collections around the world. She worked with thecentury’s old tradition of sumi ink on her paintings and prints. In a1983 article in Time Magazine, they asserted "her trail blazingaccomplishments are analogous to Picasso". Her art mergedtraditional calligraphy with abstract expressionism, and she was noted as theforemost calligrapher of the 20th century. Residing in New York inthe 1950's after an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art she came to knowJackson Pollack, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and other luminaries of theabstract expressionist movement.
