The son, SS Captain Rudolf Von Ribbentrop, fought in 9 battles on the Western and Eastern Fronts, was wounded 5 times and was awarded Germany's highest award, the Knights Cross. He fought in the Invasion of France and was wounded in action and received the Iron Cross. As a Panzer Platoon Commander, he distinguished himself in the Finnish Campaign for SS Nord against the Soviets and was awarded the Finnish Freedom Cross. After recovering from wounds, he was transferred to the 1st SS Division Leibstandarte, Panzerregiment. In 1943, he participated as a Panzer Commander in the Third Battle of Kharkov. Ribbentrop's Regiment was caught under heavy fire by the Soviets in a village, and Ribbentrop's Regimental Commander, Erckhardt was killed. Right before Ribbentrop's panzer's antenna was shot off, he was ordered to take command of the regiment. Ribbentrop immediately ordered a high-speed advance destroying several Russian light tanks on the way and manage to penetrate 40 miles behind the Russian lines. This led not only to the capture of Karkov but also of Alexeyevska. Then, they held out against strong Soviet counterattacks. In this attack, Ribbentrop was again wounded being shot through the lung, but he continued to fight and lead his troops. Afterward, he was awarded the Iron Cross First Class. He then took over 7th Company in March 1943 and led it against the Russians in the re-capture of Kharkov which broke the encirclement and temporarily stalled the Russian advance. He, then took over the 1st Panzer Platoon of 6th Company and led his troops in the Retreat of Kharkov and was awarded the Knights Cross in heroic action against the Russians. In August 1943, he was transferred to the 12th Panzer Division. After training junior officers, he was made commander of 3rd Company, Panzer Regiment 12 and led his troops in the defense of Normandy. In this battle, he was wounded again and for his leadership on the battlefield he was awarded the Iron Cross in Gold and the Panzer Assault Badge. Ribbentrop fought in the last major offensive battle, Operation Wacht Am Canal (Battle of the Bulge). He served out the balance of the War in Defense of Germany as commander of SS Panzer Regiment 12 and surrendered to the Americans when the War ended. After the War, Ribbentrop became a wine merchant, while his father was tried and executed for War Crimes. In a last conversation between Father and son, both agreed the senior would be executed for his leadership in drawing up the Doctrine of War, the Germany-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact and the Alliance with Italy and they said their farewells. The son, Ribbentrop wrote a book about his father in 2008 entitled "Mein Vater: Erlebnisse und Erinnerungen" and an English translation was published by Front Line Books, London, England in the last couple of years. The son, Ribbentrop passed away at the age of 96.
