Description: ENGLISH BIOLOGIST WHO WAS A LEADING CRITIC OF CHARLES DARWIN’S THEORY OF NATURAL SELECTION: HE WAS FIRST AN ADVOCATE FOR NATURAL SELECTION AS A MEANS FOR EVOLUTION AND LATER A PASSIONATE OPPONENT AND WAS THEN CONDEMNED BY BOTH THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND DARWINISTS ST. GEORGE JACKSONMIVART (1827-1900) SIGNED CARD, “With the good wishes of St George Mivart,1st June 1898, 77 Inverness Terrace”, on a card 3.5 x 4.25, by the English biologist famous for starting as an ardent believer in natural selection who later became one of its fiercest critics. In 1871 he published On the Genesis of Species, in which he criticized Darwin’s 1859 theory of natural selection. Mivart argued that natural selection could not produce structures as complex as the vertebrate eye, because the beginning stages of the structure would serve not purpose until all of its components were present. He also argued that human intellect was a result of divine power, denying a natural explanation of mind. This position estranged him from other Darwinians. In1884, Mivart proposed to explain the development of individuals and of species with a common cause, which he said was instinct. Mivart’s critique prompted Darwin to add an additional chapter on “Miscellaneous Objections” to the sixth, and final, edition of the Origin of Species, published in 1872. Mivart tried to reconcile his Catholicism with his interpretation of biological science. He would later reverse his previous stance, and challenge the authority of the church, concluding that the Bible and Catholic doctrine could not be reconciled with science. Neither his scientific nor his religious contemporaries accepted Mivart’s reconciliation theories, and some publications on those theories ended up on the Vatican’s list of forbidden reading. In 1900, six weeks before he died, he was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Throughout his life he was a prolific author who published many books and articles. The card with his extremely rare handwritten sentiment, signature, date, and address, is in fine condition, with minor age toning. #12645 Certificate of Authenticity This item has been authenticated and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by our parent company, History Makers Autographs.
